Bash ring sizes explanation please

I am planning to buy a 36T middle chain ring to convert my bike to a 2x9. What I want to know is, when buying the light bash ring to go where the big ring used to be, what size bash ring should I get - are you supposed to get the same size as your middle ring or bigger?
