Moving from Hybrid to Mountain and buying advice needed

I have been cycling for a couple of years now but since the arrival of my recent son it has gone off the boil. I used to cycle a round trip of 14 miles a day to work and done a couple of the London – Brighton rides. I purchased a Trek 7.2 FX hybrid in 2009/10 which I absolutely love. I am now looking at getting into mountain biking but have a budget.
In fact the budget is dictated by how much I would be able to sell my Trek for. So my question is two fold:
1. How much would I expect to receive for my Trek and ebay or forums?
2. With a budget of approx £300 what mountain bike should I look at.

To tell how much you are going to get for your Trek a crystal ball is needed.
For £300 it is going to be difficult to get anything falling into XC range. If you could stretch you budget a little then maybe Carrera Voulcan or Specialized Hardrock. I think Ebay may be good idea if you don't mind used.0
