Wha kit do you take out on the road?

Hey guys,

What kit do you take with you on a ride? I went out on a longish ride on Sunday in the countryside (West Wickham, Kent) without any kit. I know it'd be a good idea to take equipment to repair my bike in the event of a puncture etc...just not sure what I need to take.

I'm thinking:

Pump - but what sort of pump
puncture repair kit or new inner tube
tools - set off allon keys? Tools to get inner tube off.

Anything else?

As you can tell I'm a bit of a newbie!

Many thanks

Chain tool is a good one, I've snapped a chain before so came in use, obviously you need to know how to use it as well. Maybe practice a bit of old chain if you have some.

Keep a bit of cash in my bike bag as well.
  • Mobile phone (to phone Mrs Onion if all goes wrong)
    Wallet with cards/cash
Door keys (forgotten a few times!)
Spare tube (or two if it is a long ride)
    Tyre levers
    Mini pump
Mini tool (relevant allen keys etc all in one)
    Chain tool/spare link
    Banana/malt loaf/marmalade sarnies

    On the Bike:
Inner Tube, Tyre Levers, Puncture repair kit -> all in a nice little continental tube-bag (which fits in a jersey pocket too) http://www3.bike-discount.de/bilder/big/58050/tube-bag-race-28-60mm.jpg

    In the Jersey:
Multi-tool -> allen keys, screwdriver etc.
Pump - Topeak Race rocket HP
Phone In a little plastic bag-> So if anything major happens i can call for a lift! (+I use strava)
    Keys
    Food.
(money - sometimes.. mainly for longer rides)

    What i should probably have?
    Chain tool + links

Here's what I take, either in a saddle bag (winter bike) or Lezyne Caddy Sack jersey bag (good bike).

2 inner tubes, patch kit (Lezyne rescue box), 2xCO2 carts, CO2 inflator (Giant Control Blast), cycling specific multitool (Topeak Hexus II includes tyre levers and chain tool), spare KMC quick link (for joining chain), Park Tools emergency tyre boot, cloth (for wiping hands/tyres), small general purpose multitool with knives and pliers, Look KEO cleat covers.

On my winter bike I have a Topeak Pocket Rocket Masterblaster attached to the frame. For the good bike I carry a Topeak Micro Rocket AL in my jersey.

I also stuff a few cable ties into the handlebars, but I've never used them.

Depending on weather, I'll stuff a race cape into my jersey. I usually carry a couple of gels for rides >30miles.

Finally, phone, cash and garage key.

dont have a saddle bag but usual kit involves

mobile - gps & music (also helpful if 'that call' needs to be made)
all in one toolkit - about as much use as a chocolate fireguard but can make minor tweaks if needed.
    puncture repair kit with levers.
    mini pump
    drink
raincoat stuffed into the back of the jersey in the current weather

would be useful to have a sadle bag but all these fit nicely into my jersey pockets (bar the pump which is fixed to the frame) without rattling around and still room for food if going on a longer ride.

Small seat bag with multi tool, tyre levers, chain tool, puncture repair kit and a couple of spare chain links. Two spare tubes in my jersey pockets. On top of that a bit of cash, mobile (for emergencies and tracking ride) and some ID plus whatever food and drink I need. Depending on weather I may take a race cape.

    Phone
    Money + card
    Tubes x 2
    Allen keys
    Tyre irons
    Mini chain tool
    Quick link
    Patch of tyre

When you list it all there seems like quite a lot, Phone, money and pump in my jersey, the rest in a small(Tardis like) under seat bag.

Oh, I also wear a UTAG - a mini USB on a wrist band that has all my medical info and next of kin etc and nice big ICE (In Case of Emergency) logos. I'm just a little paranoid about painkillers as I'm allergic to virtually all of them, in particular morphine, which is normally the first thing you're given by paramedics in an accident - not that I plan for anyone to actually need to give me painkillers of course !!!!!

Am I right in thinking diabetic? I don't think we all release quite what some people HAVE to carry. I have slight asthma, so carry an inhaler when riding "just in case", but if I left this at home, and started wheezing, I would merely have to sit still and breathe deeply until it subsided, or twiddle home at an easy pace. But knowing a couple of diabetics who have played sport at top level, I know what can happen when things "go wrong" for them.

Sounds a pretty good snack menu too :D

For me, spare tube, pump, packet of leeches, and a Topeak tool that has all the bit you would need including tyre leavers and chain tool.

And I left a few things out of that list, 'cos I didn't want you lot takin' the pith :D

The advantage of weighing 55k and being diabetic is 'enforced' snacking!

Normally only two drinks and plenty of snacks (I am diabetic also) and a phone.

If it goes tits up then I call the wife.

I do have a saddle bag (small) with 1 inner tube, 1 tyre lever, keys, £20 and co2 pump and 3,4,5,6mm hex keys just in case the wife is out for the day.

My ride partner takes one ribena drink - he makes me look like I have over packed.
