I would like to buy a Tiagra 10 speed 10 x 30 cassette to replace the current 10 speed 11 x 28 that I have on my compact (front chain ring = 34 x 50 ) I have shimano 105 derailleur both front and rear, does anyone know if the 105 will accept the larger ring smoothly and if so will I have to add a couple more links to the chain? Many Thanks Steve

There is no such thing as a 10x30 cassette. Do you mean 11x30?

    assume you mean tiagra 12-30

but exactly which 105 rear mech do you have? 5600 or 5700? short or long cage?

    with 50-34 front, 30-12 rear, that's 16+18 = 34, i.e. you need a rear mech with a capacity of 34t

that is *way* over the limit for a 105 5600 short cage, but ok for a long cage, but if it's 105 5700 you are ok with either

if it's a 5600 long cage, the spec. says 27t maximum sprocket, you can probably adjust it to be ok on a 30, but you will be exceeding the rated max. so be careful, for 105 5700 it's ok with 30t

you'll need to get a new chain and adjust it to the correct length, see the rear mech instructions for how to do this...

That's wonderful advise sungod, I've just checked and have a 105 5700 short cage so I'll go ahead, many thanks.
    your correct of course I did mean a 12 x 30 Tiagra
In answer to the other question its to ride up the San Genesio Edelweiss climb in a few weeks. plus the Punta Velena and Zonkolan I could probably do the last 2 OK on my current cassette as it was fine going up the Anglaru last year but at 60 years old I want all the help I can get on the Edelweiss

FYI I had the same idea on my Trek Madone 5.9. which has a compact chainset and 11-28 rear cassette. I reckon the rear mech is a medium cage though I'm not certain

Did the Rutland CICLE sportive back at the end of April and struggled a bit on some of the steep sections (~3500ft of climbing over 50 odd miles). The foul weather didn't help either. I'm coming up for to my 68th birthday and need all the help I can get since i don't have much scope for improving my fitness.

Switched to a Tiagra 12-30 cassette and got away with it without any need to extend the chain length or fiddle with the B-screw adjustment or tweak the indexing. All went surprisingly smoothly.

Did the Lincoln Grand Prix sportive in early May and found things much better. Less climbing over the 100K route but there was the sting in the tail of the cobbled Michaelgate climb in the centre of Lincoln right at the end which I managed no problem.

The advice is - just give it a go. As long as you don't use Big/big or Small/small ratios (which you shouldn't anyway) you will probably be fine

Well said. There are too many MTFU types here who don't ride really big hills and don't appreciate the necessity of very low gears when spending days climbing in the mountains.
