One of the few sequels to do an original classic some justice.

Saw Promethius a few days ago, it made very little sense but I think it did justice to the original style. Was clearly a Ridley film! Liked it very much as part of the 'Aliens universe'
--just noticed the Promethius thread... I'll get in there!--0 -
aye not too shabby for a sequel0
-
Agreed it was a fantastic sequel in the Cameron tradition.
I much preferred the "extended" version of Aliens with the unseen footage containing the part where "Newt's" parents come back to the vehicle with the face hugger attached to her dad, additional footage in Sulaco and those epic "sentry guns" to name a few..0 -

Extended/directors of Aliens is okay but really not required for the film. The reasons for deleting them are valid (add nothing, waste time), but I'll watch it.
Directors cut of Alien is more of an experimental cut and adds things but cuts others. Ridley says he prefers the theatrical so that's the one I go with.
The "Assembly Cut" of Alien 3 - infinitely better.
Problem I've got with Aliens though is the dated scenes at the beginning with 80s suits (in the future!). Alien on the other hand has not dated at all (aside from not having over the top CGI and not being 3D, thankfully).
Still a cracking series though. Even the fourth, while weak and flawed in ways is still a good watch.0 -
"The ship is on its way, eta 16 minutes!"
Love itCurrent bike: 2014 Kinesis Racelight T2 - built by my good self!0 -
and of course "I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure"0

And not forgetting: "We're on an express elevator to hell - going down!""I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0

110% agreed on that, but the "Assembly Cut" is absolute hens' teeth to find
I was given an excellent copy (7GB in size!) through a work colleague, but I haven't found it for download or for sale on DVD0 -
It's on the Quadrilogy set and there's an updated version on the Anthology set (fixed some of the audio apparently). Yet to watch it on the Blu Ray set (fyi, someone said to me the other day they got the set for £10. Not sure where from).0

Picked up the Anthology box set on Blue-ray last weekend for a tenner in ASDA. Only watched Alien and Aliens on it yet but well worth it for £10.2011 Canyon Nerve AM 5.0

Do you really notice the improvement on BD format on such an old film?0
-
Easily. Age of the film doesn't matter, film is a much higher resolution (even than Blu Ray) in the first place and with some remastering they come up really nice. It's not like it's going to be pin sharp and glossy like a modern CGIfest, but there is a lot more detail there everywhere.
Depending on your TV however. With HD stuff, you really notice more with a big (40"+) TV, or by sitting closer. A smaller TV tends to hide imperfections and makes things look sharper, but less detailed, so can make DVDs look good.0 -
I run BD to a hardly-worth-it 37" tv and to be honest, I find a lot of BDs a bit grainy. I read into it and apparently lots of BD films don't quite look right because they weren't filmed for the medium in the first place. I imagined a 30 year old film to suffer even more! But I do like the sound of BD Aliens for a tenner, might see if my Asda has this tonight0

Yep, was the extended version as well - no indication in the paper, the first I knew of it was when they showed the footage of the colonists finding the Alien ship."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Its the crazy swiss bloke giger that makes it so visually stunning....the first person to create something original that actually was 'believable' as an alien, rather than a bloke in a fancy dress suit with bug eyes

lol i enjoyed the film, not sure if channel 4's advertising is regional but on one of the ad breaks almost the entire 3min segment was Shane Warne telling me how sexually attractive to wimmen i could be if i had a hair transplant, think i would rather have a face hugger.0
