how do i fit oversized handlebars

i want to change my handlebars on my gt avalanche from standard to oversized as they are quite short in width. what other components are needed as well as handlebars to do this? also could i do this myself or does it need to go to my bike shop. im a joiner so used to using tools etc and have done repairs on cars but this is my first bike.

Oversized does not mean the width, but the clamp size ie 31.8mm compared to 25.4mm.

You would need a new stem.

You just need a couple of allenn keys to swap the bits over. But if you go from very narrow to very wide the cables/hoses mught be too short.
