Anybody got any ideas to stop it and quieten things down out back?

cut an old inner tube up and wrap it around the frame (cheap option) buy a new fancy shimano shadow plus rear mech (expansive option). Buy a chain guide, (another expensive option) :lol

Can't remember the last time I rode the bike without headphones. For all I know the bike could be making a whole host of noises...

I just buy bikes that don't have chainstays, but if I didn't I'd use headphones

tape it.
velcro it.

Shimano shadow plus or new SRAM Type 2 rear derraileurs.

The clutch system really works and keeps good chain tension and reduces chain slap.

Ive used a neo/kevlar wrap on the chainstay for years, might cost a few quid but they last forever!

I run my chains slightly shorter by one link (a trick my bike shope told me)

This seems to lessen the noise

Shorter than one link longer, obviously. Gotta watch these dodgy bike shopes.

one link shorter than the two you're s'posed to have set up with. Does tighten things up but never noticed any difference when it starts getting rough.

Can anyone tell me why the Shadow plus has a button to press to make it work? Does pressing the button effect the operation of the derailleur to some extent? Is there some reason they dont just make it witht he system "on" all the time?

The button is used to deactivate the clutch system so you can remove the rear wheel or carry out other maintenance.

And I seem to have pretty much eliminated chain slap;

2x10, medium cage rear mech (XT), Blackspire Stinger and a neoprene chainstay protector. That and when things get bumpy ride in large (middle) chain ring and one of the bigger cogs out back. Seems to have worked for me.

Used to make a terrible noise when I was running 3x9, long cage mech & inner tube wrapped around the chain stay.

I don't really see how.

changing to the next cog up on the rear will do the same or more.

Plus if you get your gears wrong you're more likely to do damage.
