Been searching for helmets, and the only style i like is the BMX/ downhill styled ones. Been looking at getting the Giro section, anybody have any info on these, the bikeradar review wasnt that extensive?

Apart from the fact you'll look like a complete nodder, dh/bmx helmets are shite for riding your bike in. Heavy and poorly ventilated.

Get a Giro Monza or summat like that if you want a Giro.

I recommend the Giro Indicator. It's half the price. It looks like a helmet. It's as comfortable as I would expect a helmet to be. It protects your head. So it seems to be 'fit for purpose' as far as I can work out.

I've never seen anyone riding Downhill with a p1ss pot lid - not round these parts anyway

Try a '661 Recon' or 'THE F-14' or even a 'POC Trabec' if you're feeling flush

Just get one that fits. If you want a plsspot style helmet, get one. Just make sure it fits properly or you're better off not bothering.
  • Cheers guys, got a bit more to work with now

Ridden with and own both Giro Hex and Feature and the ventilation is good on both, no issues with overheating and very comfortable.

As someone else said though you have tgo go with what fits and feels good. Go try some on and see what ya like.

Really? I think folk look far more like complete nodders in normal helmets. Each to their own I guess.

I have both and tend to go all SWAT and use the 'pi$$pot lid' in winter or when it's raining heavily and in warmer weather I go nodder with the large plastic quiff. They're both light, fit properly and serve the purpose for which they are intended, which is the main criteria really.

For DH they are amazing, however I would die if I had my head stuck in a pi$$ pot lid on a longer ride with lots of climbing. No ventilation will give you brain fade to the max.

Are we talking the same turkey here? I assumed 'PP lid' referred to the retro style BMX 'German helmet' type, not a full face DH helmet..???
  • I went down to Halfrauds to go try some on, and in the end i favoured the Giro Selection. Great little helmet, lightweight, comfortable, and just what i was looking for. Ordered it from amazon for about 35 quid, cant wait to try it out.

lukeman: Section is very good. Super Giro quality and featherlight. If it fits you won't be disappointed.

Helmets are functional items, not a fashion statement. Decide what type of riding you'll be doing, do some research on the best lids for that and get one. Try as many on as you can, the fit is the most important thing.

A well designed helmet is actually only good for what its designed for i.e. BMX helmets for BMX, roadie helmets for roadies etc. A helmet that claims to be good for multiple uses is probably not very good for anything.

I have a Specialised Tactic for XC/trail riding, and I can't fault it. It was about £40.

Is the ventilation a major problem on these helmets, ive read a few grumbles about it?

Actual ventilation I don't find too bad they're not draughty like an XC lid but there is a movement of air. The biggest problem with using them for trail riding is that they don't cope with perspiration very well the minimal padding works up to a point then saturates with sweat ewwwwwww. The absence of a retention system means that the pads just suck it all up and it pour it out somewhere else. some days it feels like it's raining :)

Cosy in winter though and fine if you're just sessioning stuff
  • Ah thats not too bad then , will just have to deal with it! Still hasnt arrived :( will let you know what i think of it when i get a chance!

I love having a ridiculously large head so every time I go into a shop I can rarely just discreetly try on helmets. I desperately need one for trails as the road one looks shockingly bad.

Agree with everyone though. Definitely wouldn't get a bmx style one. Traveling to the trails on a hot day will be a nightmare!

Look around for sales of last years models and pick up a bargain (that's my advice for most things though!).

I got a 2011 giro xar in one of the recent sales on wiggle/crc for £46, don't even need a new helmet but a 120 quid one for 46 was too good to miss, was only available in a nice matt brown but what the hell.
  • Came today and all i can say is that im really impressed! Well packed, good delivery time...
The helmet itself is extremely light, looks great and has a really nice fit. No grumbles what so ever
