I am currently looking to buy a jacket and would appreciate any recommendations for which jackets are breathable and water-resistant, looking to spend no more than £100.

Thanks

i got the yellow one of these at the beginning of the year - it ticks both your boxes, but the big one for me is it is so small and light (when wrapped up) so you can always take it with you, and would forgett you are carrying it

Gore Phantom II; if you want something with a bit of warmth. I use it in the depths of winter with merino base layers through to Spring / Autumn (or the current weather) just with a jersey under it. It has zip off sleeves incase you get too warm as well. It's not classed as waterproof, but mine's kept me dry in plenty of downpoors. I've just washed it in Nikwax to give it some extra proofing for what's expected to be a very wet ride on Saturday night. Do a bit of googling, youshould be able to find it under £100. Mine was £84.

If you're looking for a a showerproof / windproof, then I've also got a Craft Performance Light, it's wind proof, showeproof (it'll with stand quite a drenching) and packs into a fist sized ball.

I used this for the Wiggle Intercat on Sunday. It wasn't completely waterproof (not much would be after 3 hours in the rain), but it was very breathable:

£26 is a bargain. It squashed down to an apple sized ball in it's own drawstring container
I wore this with a long sleeve merino top, all sweat wicked away from skin, so I didn't feel wet, and I wasn't cold either

Thanks for the replies so far, I don't think the gore one is an option due to sizing - I'm not a particularly slim build!

It looks like a mountain bikers jacket, and fits like one

I have read a lot of comments on the gore which say it is quite a slim fit jacket - Is it more a regular fit then?

I'm 13.5 stone and 6'2". My phantom fits fine. It's not a snug race fit, but you're right, it is a slim-ish fit. There's room to move and get a jersey and base layer underneath.

The trick is......... get the correct size. The XL on me does fit like an MTB jacket, but the large fits perfectly.

foska jackets (note jacket and not long sleeved jersey) are very breathable and water resistant. If it absolutely heaves down thenunderside of arm (which is not full waterproof to allow for breathability) does eventually get a bit wet.

I bought a Mavic H2O a few weeks back and it's been put to good use on the commute this week!

Brilliant jacket, very lightweight (Gore tex paclite) and good waterproofing. Good waterproofs are never terribly breathable but the mavic has lots of zipped vents which really help to keep you cool. Coupled with a thin summer base layer I haven't overheated even when working fairly hard although like any waterproof I suspect it might start to get a bit much once the temp goes over 20degC or so.

rrp is a mind boggling £215 but Evans have them on sale for £110 (only Small and Medium left). Well worth stretching the budget in my opinion.

I took a trip to leisure lakes bikes in Preston after work today and tried on a few jackets, ended up buying the Gore Phantom in Red/Black - feels like an excellent jacket and looking forward to wearing it. The shop price matched the web so paid £99.99 :)
