Basically with 2nd hand its very much a case of what is out there within your budget that fits you.
I got my CAAD5 off the classifieds here within that budget but had to travel 140 miles each way to get it so did lots of emailing of questions photos etc. to make as sure as possible it was worth my while (which it very much was) ;-)
If you do not know what you are looking at try to take someone along who does.
The same rules apply to buying a used bike as they do for a car in terms of making sure its mechanically sound and the person selling is the owner etc.
For your budget you can get any of the popular makes (e.g Specialized, Trek, Giant etc) it just depends how old and with what levels of kit.Yellow is the new Black.0 -
Look at all the main brands - Specialized, Trek, Boardman, Cannondale, Giant, Focus, Genesis...etc and if you can try a few out. But as has already been said, it will depend what's available.
Look on Gumtree - it is good for local sellers. But be careful, meet somewhere public and take a friend.
Let us know what you are looking at or what you end up getting.0
