Edge 800 help needed

I have been successfully loading routes onto my Edge since I got it. Now, however I can't seem to save a route on to the pesky thing. I am creating the route in Bikeroutetoaster then confirming it on Basecamp before saving it to .tcx file. I then rename the file and copy it to New Files on the Garmin. However when I disconnect the Garmin and start it up the route has deleted itself.
All help appreciated folks, even a bit of mild abuse if I am doing something really stoopid.

Further to my last, if I unplug the Garmin then plug it back in without having started it the file is still there. The file only deletes itself when the Garmin is started.

i though you had to copy it as a GPX file and Garmin then converts it ?
Have you got to many routes on the system ? or it may not like the filename ?
not that I'm an expert...have yet to fully play with my 800 !
  • If you are using Garmin Connect to plan the route just click on 'Send to Device' or something like that and as long as its connected via USB it will be sent right away.

Are you putting the files to the new files folder on the garmin inbuilt memory or to the add in micro sd card?
It may be that the internal memory is full.

I am not sure if this is the same on the 800 and windows BUT on the 705 and a Mac, you not only have to delete the file from the device but then empty the recycle bin before disconnecting the device. If you do not do this the files stay on the device and clog up the memory!

Agree with Andy Watsons comment. I used all the third party sites and then garmin offered it off their own website. Design your route, set the training partner speed and send to device. So much better and easier than third party sites. No need for converting etc and I have never had any problems.

Thanks for the replies but I'm no further forward. I have deleted all the files from the unit to free up the memory and reset it to initial settings all to no avail. BTW kayakerchris what is this recycle bin of which you speak? I'm beginning to suspect that something is full somewhere but I don't know where to look.

When you say you have deleted all files from the unit how have you done this.
    1. Using the garmin on screen menu's
    2. Using windows explorer

Where do you have the unit set to keep its data files?
    1. On the garmin internal memory
    2. On the add in micro sd card.

Recycle bin on your computer. On 705 to delete a file the action is:

    Connect to computer
    open file explorer
    open history file on garmin
    delete all files
    open GPX folder
    delete all files

Go to recycle bin on the desktop of computer and empty the recycle bin
    disconnect Garmin

    800 may be different!

Using initially the on screen menus then confirming by checking with Windows Explorer.
Data is stored to the built in memory since the SD card is wholly utilized for the road mapping, sat-nav thingy.

Also thanks kayakerchris , but you are right it is different on the 800. The files and folders you refer to are not there on the 800.
  • Check the route is a valid route and is not exceeding the number of waypoints permissible on a Garmin device - routes that are too long and exceed the limits may load but cannot be followed, and are ignored.

Checked that by creating a route around the block, just 4 left turns. No joy but thanks anyway.
