Am looking to but a GPS device partly for my bike and also to share with my wife who runs, so have decided on this range. The problem is which one? Finances are tight so I want the cheapest I can get away with. Not that interested in heart rate monitor but cadence could be useful. The 310xt looks like the best, but I can get an old model 305 for around £100, but would a 405 / 110 be better? I guess its the Strava capability that i am most interested in.

Many thanks

  • I use a 305 with cadence sensor and it's fully Strava compatible. Only minor issue is its slow to find the signal sometimes and grade is inaccurate.

The biggest differences between the 305 & 310 are you can swim in the 310 and you can connect a power meter

The 305 does more than most people ever use.

I'm another 305 user and can confirm it's a great bit of kit for the cash. I use mine for cycling and running (with shoe and bike cadence sensors) and also upload results to Strava from it.

The only issue I could see that persuades me to a 305 / 310 instead of the 405 is that the 305 / 310 seem to have a larger screen therefore better on the bike....although i haven't seen either in the flesh

One thing in favour of the 310xt is that you can buy a QR bike mount for it which allows the head unit to be mounted on bars/stem without the strap. The head unit just twists back into the watch strap if you want to use it on your wrist. Having a watch strapped to your bars looks pretty sh!t IMO.

The 305 is perfect unless you have a powermeter.
You can get a Quick Release kit for it: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=52426
The 310xt only adds stuff you don't need.
The 405 is a running watch. It doesn't have the cycling functions of the 305.
I have used them all, and for the needs you describe, it's really a very easy decision. It's the best and the cheapest option.
