Is it me, or are there hardly any decent bikes available at sale prices lately?

Whenever I do find a decent bike on sale (i'm looking around the £600 - £750 price point), there's only ever the size small or extra large left. Bikes on sale from uk retailers are not as well spec'd as bikes not on sale from abroad (eg Germany).

Is it normally this way?

Wrong time of year, isn't it. Everyone's got their 2012 stock in now and the only 2011s left are the ones that are hard to sell.

2012 stock is coming to an end and most is sold out in medium and large, most retailers are selling what they have although I know Cube and Giant are more or less sold out for 2012 now in most of the xc range.
Retailers will start to order 2013 stock soon and they will then hit the stores around sept October time.
If you looking to buy then find the bike you want or get a short list then trail the net and find someone who has one!
