Does anybody do this?

I normally transport the bike in the back of the car, but am thinking about time's when we'll go away for the weekend with girlfriend, dog and baby and I want to take the bike with me for a bit of "me" time :), there wont be room for the bike in the car..

I have roof mounted carriers, which would be OK at a push for the enduro, but I couldn't take the C456 on it.

So, wondered whether it would be an idea to get a big aero box for the roof, so that I could put the bike in there (only 1, girlfriend will be looking after baby...)- wheels off, bars turned etc. Benefit also is that its nice and discreet for parking.

So, does anybody else do this? Good idea or silly idea?

Me and a mate put our bikes in his roof box before like you said taking wheels off and turning bars. It was only for a short journey though (about an hour and no motorway driving). Not sure I would trust it for much longer, how far would your journey be?
The main thing I would check would be what weight limit your roof box has and see whether the bike is bellow that.

I've been up and down the country with bikes on top, so no worries of trust, should be far safer.
Journeys will be 2 - 5 hrs kind of thing.

Only concern is them physically fitting in. Gear, clothes and towels in there, it won't move :)

Might pop halfords and see if I can persuade them to have a mess, see if we can get a bike in one, they have a sale on too this weekend.

Great idea, just check for fit before you buy. Loads of people do it and a bit more secure as people can't see inside. Good idea to lock the bike bits together inside the box to make theft harder. This is particularly good if you have more than one bike.
