I would still go for the specialized. I have a specialized rockhopper from maybe 2007 and the frame is just so well designed, it's a bike you can chuck about on trails and still handle nearly everything. I have only just replaced the forks which were siezed and come to the end of it's life.

Last year I bought a Voodoo Bokor 26inch wheel. I was attracted to it big time because it was slightly different, it had 140mm of travel fork and seemed a well speced bike for the price. What let it down was the poorly designed frame and that 140mm fork hadn't been thought into the design of the bike from the begininning. I'm sure they had designed it with a 100mm fork in mind but thought they could make it more attractive by specing the bike up to 140mm. The head angle was so raked that it made it quite unstable it was quite a heavy frame and just didn't have some of the features the specialized did.

New companies don't have the R&D experiance a long established company does Like Specialized. I sold the bike this year to get a well designed full susser from Trek.

I wouldn't - I'd get the Cross. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the frame or geometry, in fact the geo is remarkably similar to the Hardrock. The components, especially the fork, are quite a bit better and is also lighter.

No question. That Cross looks pretty good for the money.
