Does anyone have any opinions about which sportive in the North West area would be most suitable as a first attempt, so as not to put me off them before I even do one, and is there generally a time limit to complete them in. Thanks.

You wont do much better than the Polocini events. I'm doing the next one on Tuesday but entries are closed.
Details of future events are here. http://polocini.com/cyclosportives/2012-events/
Value for money is excellent with loads of superb food to keep you going. They are also very relaxed events and all but the slowest rider wont have an issue with time limits.0 -
