Hi bikerader.com members,

I am currently looking to buy a 26" mountain bike for my son. Bear in mind that I am living in the US.

Budget: US$250

Shortlisted bikes:

The following are all used bikes but in pretty good shape
- 2003 Schwinn Mesa GSX: http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/Bike ... &Type=bike
- 2011 Trek 820: http://www.bikepedia.com/Quickbike/Bike ... &Type=bike
- 2005 Haro V3 (not too sure about the year): http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/Bike ... &Type=bike

The following are department store bikes. I know these are discouraged but they fit my budget and are some of the best ones available from what I've read online. I realize most people here won't be familiar with these bikes but please provide any feedback you can based on the specs listed on the website.
- Hiland Tempest: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hiland-Tempes ... e/14659084
- Mongoose Snarl Bike: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mongoose-Snar ... e/15711161

Riding on mostly paved road, some cross country

No preference for hardtail or suspension

My son is 19 y/o, 150 lbs, 5ft 8.5 in

id say the mongoose or the Haro TBH, slighly edging towards the Mongoose because its a more recent model. Either or have crap forks and will need replacing at some point BUT look on ebay, theyre are some bargains to be had fork wise.

Does the bike HAVE to be new?? (I take it, its a present??) Maybe scour ebay and post a few links and we can give some advice on better yet used bikes.
    Idiot ^^^^^^^^^

  • The bike doesn't have to be new.

Is the Schwinn Mesa GSX any good? I noticed it had some good components like the Shimano Deore rear derailleur or am I completely wrong about this?

Would you say that the Mongoose Snarl is better than the Hiland Tempest?

Also, which of the 3 used bikes (Schwinn/Trek/Haro) would you say is the best?
  • I realize most of you probably don't have experience with the above mentioned bikes but if you compare them based on the tech specs listed on their respective websites that would be great!
