How do you know when to change the chain???

Hi, when do you know the chain needs replacing or don't you really know until
It happens?. Plus what do you think is a good replacement chain for future reference?.

or just don`t worry about it, lube it regularly and run it for 000`s of miles I`ve got an old Trek of `98 vintage and the rollers are starting to snap they`re that thin never been replaced in 14 years
