96 out of half a million deaths (~0.02%) were cyclists. Most of them will have been killed by motorists, most of which will have happened in London. Focussing on 'accidental' deaths (of which some will be disguised murders and suicides) you are about as likely (91 deaths) to die falling from or out of a building (0.55% Cyclist, 0.53% falls). You're not going to stop using tall buildings now are you?
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

If you had been hit by a car/bus I could understand the worry, but you crashed into pole FFS.

Agreed, it's not like you were hit by a bus! You didnt see an inanimate object in your way and ploughed into it.

I'f i'd done that, even if i'd ended up in the back of an ambulance with broken bones my missus would have laughed at me and called me a tw@:mrgreen:

  • That diagram reminds me of a stat I heard years ago. Apparently young men (the scourge of society if you believe a lot of newspaper headlines) are significantly more likely to commit suicide than murder.

It's a feature of humans that we tend to fixate on scarier sounding stuff, like getting squished by a lorry, and ignore mundane stuff like respiratory infections or diabetes. I guess that's why the "at least I'm not fat" response by a cyclist sounds a bit silly, when in reality the health benefits of cycling far outweigh the dangers.

Ah, some harsh responses above. Loved ones worry about us. We worry about our loved ones. For future reference when next you have a minor spill, lie about it! That's what the rest of us do.

Think is "I wasn't paying attention and rode into a post" is the kind of lie you tell to stop your better half worrying. Especially if the truth is that you've been run over/attacked by a psycho driver!

That's true. The second time I was knocked off I told my fiancee I'd slid off on some diesel.

Try that, let us know how it went. Good luck.

Well, I've never been great with relationships but I think that might not go too well.

But give it a go anyway. What's the worst that can happen? :)

I hate to sound like a yobo, but dude, really, man-up.

If you ride a bike, your going to fall off from time to time.

Besides, you are saving money, keeping fit and giving yourself daily R&R time. All of which are of benefit to your family.

increased fitness in you must surely be appreciated by the missus ;)
  • Sorry to hear about your fall - could have been a lot worse.

If you give up commuting by bike because of this you may regret (and resent) it. You can be risk averse to the nth degree and still come a cropper in some unexpected way doing a completely innocuous activity.

Why not get your missus (and kids if old enough) out cycling of a weekend?

I fell off when first getting back into riding (well, when i dragged my bike out on one sole occaision for a trip with a mate down the local towpaths). I got the front wheel caught the wrong side of a wet wooden strip dividing a tree from the towpath (it was hidden under wet leaves). When i realised and tried to hop over it the front got caught and went from under me. I bailed to the side to avoid the tree and ended up chinning the canal bridge wall that we'd just crossed........it hurt like hell and resulted in the typical gravel rash on both hands and pretty majorly across my chin. My wife just laughed and like to remind me of it every so often.

I bought her a bike in spite....she has only ridden it twice! ahahah

    Morning fella commuters!

Yes the LP is back and alive! Well, I commuted this morning. Many thanks for the words of encouragement and for the tales of your various mishaps. The stats given by various contributors will be used as ammunition. Missus LP is away working and does not know that I biked it in this morning but she will find out and armed with the various 'sources', I will let her know that I aim to do a commute next week too and will be continuing with it.

After a fortnight since the fall, the bruising has near enough disappeared and the elbow abrasion has healed quite nicely. I do a few weekend forays while recovering and took a newbie roadie on the bike paths on Western Avenue and saw a crazy roadie/ Triathlete cycle westwards from the Greenford section and then towards Northolt on the road!....not one of you guys here I hope? :?

Secondly, last weekend I cycled to Harefield and had a nice descent down one of its steep hills and decided later to 'climb' it.....

So, thanks a million guys....hopefully will try and avoid any rain on the return trip back and still aim for my twice a week commute in June/ July.

Oh I forgot to mention that I do not usually paticipate in SCR but passed a girl in a racer around Kilburn station and passed a fella in his mountain bike around Willesden Green...however I was overtaken by a hybrid down the A5 (as lights turned red) and saw a few cyclists jumping red lights.....

When I got back into cycle commuting again regular (change of job meant no bike commuting for a few years) I warned the missus I'd be in an accident again (got previous) - only lasted 18 months when I was involved in a shunt - took two years to get an operation, and 3.5 years to get a settlement. Still cycling though.
