    Here goes...

    on your last example of:
    175mm, 12-25, ita 36x24, 52x39

-175mm is the crank arm length. 170 is 'short', 172.5 'medium' and 175 'long' - largely related to leg length and down to preference, shorter cranks feel smoother and more spiny and longer ones make you feel more powerful in some cases. 50% of people wouldn't tell the difference anyway.
-12-25 is the cassette size. 12-25 is a good all-rounder for moderate hills and good ability, 12-23 is very limited for hills and only really for the flats, TT and strong riders and 12-28 will give you a good bit extra on steep hills.
-ita OR BSA denotes either an Italian or British standard thread for the bottom bracket. Most are British, obviously Italian frames use Italian - but have your shop check. the number after just describes the threads again.
-52x39 is the teeth on the chain set. 52x39 is a 'standard double', and 50x34 is a 'compact'. a standard does restrict some up hills. A compact is a great all rounder for most, but may not be of benefit if you dont go near hills.

    Hope it helps!
