Cheers for your interest, I have up to £500 to spend on the bike, and I'm wondering what to spend it on. I have a nice OCLV frame and shifted everything over from this: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/tre ... e-ec030273 which was a C2W bike.

So, since buying I've managed to calm my inner bike-porn reaction, and have so far bought a hope aheadset, xt front mech. What I'm wondering is what would make the biggest difference for my moolah. Currently I ride road and what can only be described as 'gentle ATB', ie tow paths and simple single-track. I will ride heavier stuff as the fitness increases, but I'm thinking currently prob the best I can upgrade is the wheelset.. I do like the XT wheel set, simililar in weight to xtr just half the price! But I'm also thinking maybe chainset, again xt is appealing but is xtr worth the extra? Also, tires prob have big impact on weight, so I'm thinking semi-slicks maybe on my current wheels for road /towpath stuff would also make the bike lots more responsive?

If I went xt route on wheelset and chainset prob within budget, I've looked at other things like brakes and shifters but the weight difference is pretty nominal.. Are xt wheels good from CRC? Or does someone have a better suggestion? Cheers in advance.

Have a look at superstar, merlin for wheelsets, upgrading wheels is usually the fastest way to lose weight off the bike, also look at tyres.

With that spec donor bike, definately wheels/tyres first

Custom build some wheels. Check out A2Z hubs, on your choice of Stan's rim, with your choice of spoke. I've got some on Podium rims which are 1264g, makes the XTs look heavy in comparison! Crest rims would be more durable without a massive weight penalty.
