shimano spec of components

Hi all,
Does anyone have a link or can post the order in which shimano components take in terms of spec?
Its easy for SRAM, X7 is better than X5 for example, or Elixir 3 is better than Elixir 1. But I'm getting really confused with Shimano model numbers like M505 I don't know where these things fit into there range.
Thanks

M4xx = Alivio
M5xx = Deore
M6xx = SLX
M7xx = XT
M9xx = XTR
Off the top of my head it's roughly that, Alivio being the cheapest, XTR the most expensive. There are exceptions though I think, someone else may be able to offer more detail.0 -

I did look at Shimano.com but didn't find the section with all the model numbers on until now.
Within a range, eg: http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/blevel.jsp;jsessionid=v9jhPFQKtFTpTGxR2ygS01gg2dBqhrGlJYd1vG2t6HnYpn4XQ25j!-1937923999?ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181679&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302051947&bmUID=ju2iNAA, are all the different models the same spec or are some still better than others?0 -
The listing on the tech documents part of the Shimano site covers old the old and discontinued components as well as current.
For example, this chainset here is about 12 years old http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techd ... 611897.pdf0 -
I came across this, although a few are missing from what I can see:

Hover over "Components" then "Mountain Bike", and they're all listed with the most expensive at the top, do the the bargain range at the bottom. Ish

It's probably a good 4 or 5 years out of date"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
