Shimano 9 and 10 sp query

OK, apologies if this has been asked before, have searched and not found an answer yet...
I'm considering doing a 1*9 speed, because that's the shifters I have (and cassette), and losing all the extra hardware up front. But, I like the concept of that XTR Shadow Plus 985 rear mech, with the clutch thing to reduce chain slap.
Anyone know if that will give grief using 9 speed cassette and chain and M970 series shifter? Or do I really need to convert the whole shooting match to 10 speed to make it work properly? Shimano tech says 10sp Dyna -Sys compatible only, but then they want to sell more shifters, no?
