Shimano chain: link pin or power link?

I'm trying to learn how to mend various bits of my bike on-trail, as I think I've been rather lucky so far not to have to do any of this. I'm off to cycle the South Downs soon, so don't want to be a long way from home without a clue!
I have been reading about how to fix a broken chain, but am confused as to what is best for my Shimano chain. Should I get a Shimano pin, or is a power link better? Or are they just variations on a theme?! I have read quite a lot on the 'net but am still confused, so sorry if I'm asking about something obvious!

9 speed, I'd use a power link. Gold one, much better.0

Any 9 speed link will do, throw the shitty Shimano joining pins away they are about as much use as a chocolate brake pad. Dont forget you still need a chain tool with you if you bust the chain you need to be able to get it apart ready for the link.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0
