Hayes Prime brakes from merlin cycles

Hi all
Bought some Hayes Prime expert brakes from Merlin cycles. They were a cracking price and recieved them yesterday but when i got the levers out both of them had brake fluid on the outside. Not a lot, just a smearing. When I tried to wipe them clean it also took off most of the graphics and paint on the levers and reservouir, (I guess because these brakes use corrosive brake fluid rather than mineral oil). I'm not overly bothered about the graphics wiping off, although I must admit it's a bit annoying and makes the brakes look second hand not brand new. What I'm concefrned about is the fact there was brake fluid on the outside... Does this mean the seals on both levers aren't as they should be? Is this going to cause issues in the future? And will the fluid lost have an impact on the performance of the brakes?

Not sure whether I should fit them and see how they go, or return them and ask for replacements? I've tried to call Merlin today but they're closed.

Any views, opinions or suggestions on this?

As always, thanks for your help

Andy
