Loose Front Wheel

My front wheel had a lot of play in it when I went to the garage yesterday. Upon closer inspection the two nut either side of the hub were very loose. I firstly tightened them so much the wheel didn't turn so have slackened them so the wheel turns ok and no longer wobbles. Is this ok or will I lose the front at the worst possible moment on my next ride?

Nope you need to do it correctly by tightening the lock nuts against the cones.

Read Parktools about cone and cup bearing adjustment.

By nuts do you mean the cone and nut external to the axle? If so, then over-tightening them and then slackening them off until the wheel spins freely but without play is fine. To keep it permanent you will need to 'lock' the cone and nut against each other to stop the play reoccuring.
