Our family has opened a small cafe in a Cumbrian town that, due to my influence, will welcome cyclists with open arms. So what kind of fare would my fellow riders prefer? Any suggestions on kinds of cake (duh!), drinks or snacks etc would be welcome.

  • May I be the first to suggest Eccles cake?

Borrowdale tea bread, lemon drizzle, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate cake, Black forest gateaux... the list is endless.

Where is your cafe? Feel free to give yourselves a plug.

La Cucina Brampton Cumbria. My daughter is hoping to "re-brand".

Open on a Sunday. Flapjacks are sitting in our kitchen as we speak. May not get the rest just yet.

Coffee, tea and home made lemonade.

Energy drinks? Or is that not the point.

Here`s a tip-forget the food,we`ll eat and and drink anything, but if you are prepared to turn socks* on a radiator, the world will beat a path to your door.Good luck.

Boiled fruit cake - dead simple and you can't go wrong. Big slabs with a big mug of tea, at the right price.

My late mum used to make several of these for every local cycling event and despite her being an atrocious cook* she could whip up a mean boiled fruit cake and the guys loved it.

Also, bread pudding is a good way of regenerating stale bread and fruit cake.

Mars Bar cake - 10oz butter, 10oz rice krispies, 11 mars bars. Melt butter and chopped up Mars Bars together until a sludgy mess, but don't let it boil. Take off the heat, add rice krispies and stir until incorporated. Pour into a slightly greased shallow dish, press firmly with the back of a tablespoon, and leave to go cold. Cut into slices and serve.

Even though I used to be a chef and can cook up all kinds of marvels, this is what my family and friends ask for more than anything else.

Nice big tea cakes, ones made with butter preferably. All cyclists love tea cakes.

Caramel Shortbread or rocky road. Won't stop at a cafe without them.

Unless I'm going anywhere near some large hills. In which case, anything cake based will do.
