Merlin Malt 1 potential problems?

Ok, so I have just arranged to buy a Merlin Malt 1 frame with 'danseur' and have just bought a set of cheap wheels (WTB SX24 on Shimano M475) courtesy of Liam1611 in an attempt at building my first bike from scratch over the next few months. I thought I would sound out my plan so you can all shoot holes in it and point out my mistakes before I make them.

So my plan is for a nothing-too-flash, light trail bike with a 1 x 9 Deore drivetrain, mainly for the fun of the build...

Frame is on its way and the next step will be ordering a Deore 9spd rear mech, HG50 9spd cassette and a HG53 9spd chain.

I have seen this for the single ring chainset/BB, am I heading in the right direction, compatibility wise? Will this chainset/BB combo a) fit the frame? and b) work with the 9 speed Deore kit?

If not, can anyone suggest a single ring chainset and bottom bracket that will be suitable?

In the meantime Ill be saving pennies for a Recon Silver from On One..

Once I have the drivetrain sorted, the rest will be a matter of fitting the forks and bolting on bars/stem/pedals/saddle/tyres/wheels (which are all decided) and then thinking about brakes.

Any other criticisms and potential problems you see are welcomed. Would rather get a bashing on the internet than be sat there with a pile of bits that won't fit together...

  • Hi mate i m doing the same myself with an old Carrera Kraken. (i got the same Recons from On One :D). Not familiar with the crank as such but as long as you get the right size bottom bracket axle length AND the right size for your frame (usually 68mm or 73mm) it should be fine.

I t will be better when the frame arrives then you can do the measuring etc so.

measure bottom bracket shell with a good ruler then look on the manufacturers site (RaceFace to see if the state BB axle length).
measure head tube (to see what size headset cups it takes).
measure seat tube (not sure how this is done to be honest but someone will know on here) for seatpost.

All the best and enjoy the build.

EDIT: Just noticed it an chainset/BB combo so it should be good to go LMAO!.

    Thanks.

Yeah I'm fine with seatpost and the frame has a headset prefitted, so its just the BB I am unfamiliar with. You are right, it will be much easier when I have the frame in front of me!

The 63mm or 73mm measurement - is that the diameter of the hole in the frame where the BB fits? Will it be one or the other?

    Good luck with your build.

63 or 73mm refers to the length of the threaded hole through the frame (end to end.)
Any external bottom bracket that fits one length will fit the other (with the necessary spacer arrangement.)

As far as I can tell that raceface one will fit fine. :D

Right, have now got the frame. BB shell is 68mm threaded. The RaceFace crankset I was looking at says it includes an external BB, but does not list any other measurements. Does this mean I have to get the BB shell faced or will it have been done when new? (the frame is brand new and unused if that makes any difference)

    Will this all fit together?

Sorry if any of this sounds noob-like. I am very comfortable with the rest of the build, have just never had to source or fit a BB before.

68mm & 73mm will fit the same bottom bracket. the difference is almost always fixed with a spacer on the smaller size.

The DH standard is 83mm (IIRC) and needs different cranks/bottom brackets/etc. I think raceface do the "ride DH" to cover this.

Must admit I'd be tempted to go the shimano route, and stick a bash ring on this:

    Hi Ben,

The frame was previously built up, I just removed all the components so the bottom bracket shell has already been faced. Fitting the new bottom bracket will just be a matter of screwing it in and adjusting the tension correctly. Should be very easy but LBS will do it for you in ten minutes if you are worried.

Don't forget to add some grease/anti-lock unless you want to cut the bottom bracket out in future...

Cheers Matt, Just waiting for funds and I can crack on. Just the forks and drivetrain left and I'll have everything.
