Hang onto it for another year, save some more cash, but look after the Carrera. Then buy a bike which is more of a step up. Who knows what (if anything!) he will be riding in a year.

  • The component spec of the Carrera isn;t too bad, the front fork being the worst bit. 180/160mm Shimano M445/6 hyraulic brakes, Alivio/Acera deraileurs etc.

Remember since you bought that bike, VAT rose from 15-20% and manufacturers have despecced bikes to hold certain price points. I'd guess after some discount you probably paid ca £250--260 for it, and you'd have to pay £300+ currently to get similar bike in Halfords.

I sold my barely used one within 6 minutes on ebay for £175 a few weeks back which suggests your £150 is realistic if you still wanted to swap to something newer. £500 is the usual suspects of Rockrider or Hoodoo Voodoo (great spec at £500)

Remembering that selling for £175 on ebay is not the same as getting £175 in cash in your pocket as ebay (and paypal when appropriate) fee's chew a whole in that.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
