Currently running standard double shimano 2300. Coudl i get away with a cheap conversion of rear derailleur to tiagra 10spd, 10spd cassette and right STI lever and keep the other 2300 parts attached?

Cost isnt relevent, found some cheap ones for sale :D

yes, you wouldn't even need a new rear derailleur.

Would look a bit strange with different STIs but it would work.

Ey? The st-2300 is an 8 speed derailleur, are you sure it can run 10 speed?'

The indexing is in the STI not in the derailleur. The ratchet in the STI just pulls a certain amount of cable to move the derailleur the correct distance.

All Shimano 8, 9 and 10 speed systems have the same total range of movement from the largest to the smallest cog. The only thing that changes is the spacing between the gears and the width of the chain which is narrower for 9 speed and narrower again for 10 speed.

So the only thing I missed on my original post is that you will need a 10 speed chain too!
