First question would be does it have to be Italian as that seems quite specific? Plus guess it depends on what you want the bike for/to do for you e.g. touring, racing etc

For the money your looking to spend you have a massive amount of options but basically they boil down to 2.

    1) Buy an "of the peg" bike with whatever spec you get
    2) Look at a frame an get it built up (either by you or a shop)

The first option will get you a good bike but as always there will be compromises, typically in the components uses possibly lower spec wheels or part of the mechanicals will be "lower" spec in an aim to reduce their costs

The second option gives you the best flexibility however unless you know exactly what you want and can plan it down on paper first to get to your budget it can quite easily spill over.

The most important thing I would say is go and try some bikes first as they will feel different to different people & depending on what you want the bike to do will vary on things such as geometry.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.
