How far do you guys travel to get your weekly fix of MTB'ing. I live in north london and i'm not aware of any places around here. I have been to Surrey Hills several times but thats not very frequent, and costs me around £20 in petrol for a round trip (50 odd miles away). So how far are you willing to travel on a weekly basis to get some good riding in?

I am in Edinburgh, so normally I just go to the Pentlands, which is about three miles away. I am in the process of getting my fitness up slightly so that I can cycle to Glentress and back (25 miles each way). Doing that distance would cost a couple of pounds in terms of food though (Bananas and Jelly babies),

It would be about four hours round trip cycling to Glentress, but it shouldn't be too bad. (Even if it is one the road).

Four hours total travel for some good stuff is about the limit unless it is a multi day trip.

Back at home in the Peak District (when not at University), it is about 30 meters to the first good fun down. Although depending on the ride you want to do in some cases you have to go 80 meters. Plus the nearest pub is about 20 meters away :D

It is about 4 miles to some of the really good techy stuff though and Hope etc is about half an hour away on the train.

all over really, depends where we fancy riding and whether the bank account says yes. We do take turns in driving though as there is a group of us and fuel share etc to keep costs lower

Being in Cambridge, the most "decent" trails are at Thetford, which in my opinion are not even worth thinking of driving too. If I had them on my doorstep maybe I would ride them, but now i'm looking at 2-3 hours drive for anything remotely similar to what I had in Austria.

This morning I didn't have much time so just did my local 11 or 12 mile route, bridleways and a bit of singletrack 5 minutes from the front door. If I've got the time I'll drive to Lee Quarry (20 minutes) or Llandegla (75 minutes). Whatever really.

    Try living in Norwich.

2-3hrs drive to get to a decent trail (Peaks/Chilterns/Downs/Cannock), however there is some cheeky stuff that has some good hillage very close to where I live, so usually frequent the local area and do a weekend away now and then.

Winter hill as in the video above is about a 5 mile ride from my house so that gets done more than anything. Occasionally drive for an hour to Gisburn, would go to Wales every weekend if I could afford it...

Keswick is about 20 minutes drive, Whinlatter about 15 minutes. Sometimes venture upto Scotland, Mabie and Dalbeattie. They take about 2 hours.

I rode up to Whinlatter for the first time on Saturday, took one hour, which on a SS geared for offroad (32:18), wasn't too bad.

  • I'm an hours drive from Gisburn one way, an hour to Lee quarry the other way. Off to South Lakes on Tues which is about 45 mins, 2 hours to Whinlatter, 2 hours to llandegla. Discovered Chipping the other day which was about 40 mins. Winter hill is about half hour but I've not checked it out yet. Unfortunately I have nowt hilly within biking distance, but I shouldn't complain really coz I can drive to all these places.

Cannock is a 20 min drive away, if i fancy a bit of cross country (albeit very flat) i can ride out my door,
or, I have a newly constructed regional level BMX track about 200 metres from my house, been itching to try it but been a bit concerned about making myself look like a twat when i try and make the first double and then fail miserably in front of all the local yoofs!

I try to get out twice in the week, riding local bridleways, byways and some road to join them up, starting 500 yards from my front door. Weekends with the kids it is usually 45 miles to Thetford (waymarked trails great for kids, the vast array of off piste stuff is far better and there are miles and miles of it) or Grafham Water. Further afield (about 75 miles ) are Rutland, Pitsford and Alton Waters. I always make an annual pilgrimage to Bedgebury Country Park in Kent which is 90 miles away. Have done Swinley Forest, Cannock Chase and Sherwood Pines but they are a proper hike for a day trip from NW Essex.

    I've got

Sandwell Valley 3 miles away. Not bad and has had several upgrades over the winter but not had time to explore.
Sutton Park. Half an hour away by train. Not bad, nice and big but usually busy and have to look hard for hidden trails.
Cannock Chase. An hour away by train but worth it!
  • cannock is about 10 minutes drive from me, and llandegla once a month. About an hour to llandegla.
  • When I lived in North London I rode for about 20 minutes from home to get to Epping Forest...

Other than that, Chilterns / Aston Hill, Swinley Forest or Kent are all a little over an hour away with a fair bit of potential for riding.

I can ride from my front door into the pentland hills in about 30 seconds- albeit up a huge bastard of a climb. And there's some great riding up there but it's so soggy just now that I tend to just drive down to glentress or innerleithen, which takes about 40 minutes. Tis a hard life.

Anywhere from half a mile (local woods) to 40 miles (nearest trail centre) to 180 miles (Wales).

a mile or two from my work to some reasonable trails in local woods with some jumps and bumps, so do that quite a lot in lunchtimes or sometimes just after work

otherwise, from home, 30 mins = FoD, 45 mins = cymcarn

done the odd day / weekend /week away to get to some of the welsh & scottish centres

Out the door - Rideable to the local canal towpaths, common lands. Towpaths can get me going for miles, even into central London (though only done up to Kingston so far).

5 miles away - Tunnel Hill & surrounding MOD spots, Newlands Corner. Just about rideable stuff though usually would drive. Winding roads, traffic and hills on a non-road bouncy bike I'd rather drive, but have done it.

10 to 15 miles - Surrey Hills, depending whereabouts in the hills. Swinley in the opposite direction, Caesar's Camp / Aldershot MOD areas.

40 miles - Aston Hill to the north, Rogate (have yet to do), QECP to the south.

That's localish stuff. Cwmcarn & Afan are a nip down the M4 for a day's ride. Maybe not every week at £70+ petrol & bridge toll.

Occasionals to further away places with an overnight stop.

20 mile ride to QE Country Park (near Petersfield) - takes about 2 hours (or 20 minute drive if I go with one of my wet flannel mates who have a car)

I know a back route through some woods then up Butser Hill so the ride up there is almost as fun as actually riding the red trail at QE. Plus the views by the windmill on Butser are pretty impressive.

Swinley Forest would probably be my next nearest spot or perhaps the New Forest but I haven't heard of many riding spots there.. maybe someone could enlighten me?

    At uni, nothing...

When I'm home from uni then out the door, there's the local South derbyshire stuff, a few decent woods, decent rolling hills.
35-40min drive/1hr30 ride to Cannock... fairly regularly when I'm back home. Similar time up to the edge of the peaks
1hr or so up to towards Buxton, similar time up to Edale/Hope/Ladybower area depending on traffics, occasionally.
2-3hrs to Wales, occasionally, but obviously petrol costs money.

Next year I'm moving to Potters Bar so god know what I'll do then, guess just start exploring the local stuff (anyone know anywhere around there/Hertford area?) be able to head over to Aston Hill a bit too I suppose but obviously petrols money is an issue being student etc... can only just afford to insure the ****** car
