or am I remembering correctly (eh nearly had ya going there!! LOL)

Shimano derailleurs, are inter compatible with other levels of shimano kit, IE SLX rear mech will work on a deore cassette, a alivio mech on a saint cassette, xtr shifters on acera mechs etc

Im pretty sure back in the day it was all interchangeable, is this still the case?? Reason being is when my groupset finally arrives from the hong kong china man, im thinking junk the acera mechs and fit something a bit better. or is this not really needed and the acera stuff absolutely fine??

Also whats so much better with say the xtr stuff that it warrants such a huge pricetag over the standard deore??

Lighter, more accurate shifting, more reliable, plus with the latest XTR stuff I'm pretty sure it has Shimano's new clutch thing which tensions the chain properly.

But to be honest, they all do the same job. You could have Alivio or XTR but as long as it changes gear when you click the button whats the problem?

This is it see. Ive been out of the cycling bit for 20 years and the way its moved on is unreal! They didnt even have Vee's when I last had a bike!! (or they might have just been coming out) and I had an oval crank deore system! (remember them!)

But in essence its all still inter changeable, cool good to know for upgrades and blinging out. But is the Acera system fit for purpose??

Oh and another one is there any advantage in using a Hollowtech crank over an octalink one?? Not entirely sure on what bearings are in the octalink, but ive im remembering right the hollowtech is proper sealed units like a head set?

I use it on two bikes and it's fine, mate of mine uses it on his mtb and it's fine. It's nothing special.

Hollowtech is lighter, stiffer and less durable in my experience...

Yes, there's an argument that dirt can get in easier than the sealed cartridge units of old. But the benefits out weigh the cOst IMO

On your other jibberings, I'd say get a Deore break group, it's amazing value. Yes HTII works the same inprincaple ad the ahead system

Aren't Saint brakes hideously powerful? From looking at your build thread I would say you will be fine with the 446's and Saint's would just be total overkill. Better to put the money into something else maybe?

    They look cool as buggery!!

I know what you mean TS, ive not even built the bugger and im thinking of upgrades LOL. And tbf I think the 446's will be fine too, I just love the look of the 4 pot saints!

I'd go for the Saints, or the NEW (everybody's still getting the old ones) XTs or XTRs. He's a big guy, so why not get the most powerful brakes available?
Which is interesting, because Sonic has some charts somewhere that shows that the XTRs (XTM785s weren't available at the time) are actually significantly more powerful than the Saints.

As long as you don't get any 10spd stuff there is no issues.

    Try reading the FAQs.

    They will actually.

But with people mentioning SLX and XTR etc they are now mainly 10spd and the rear mechs ar no compatible with less due to different cable pulls.

    7 is 7 only.
8/9/10 are all the same other than the shimano 10spd only hubs (road only).

I know your game.... you just want another model of brake for your Crudbraketestatthepubathon

But yeah fair enough I remember reading somewhere that you are 20st+ Steelie so you probably would benefit from the extra beef on the Saint's

Nah the ice techs look like some thing from halfords chav department (ripspeed) Much prefer the look of a nice round perforated disc with plenty of braking surface. And defo dont like the hope saw discs MINGING!!

Id love some floating discs to make it look reet bo like, but aint buying Saws and defo not paying hopes prices for the DH discs!
