A question on review scores/budgets

Firstly, I realise this is both a stupid question and also a bit 'how long is a piece of string' but hopefully you'll get my general point.
Looking at the top end of the £500 bracket for hardtails, you've got the Hoodoo and Rockhopper 8.1 as class leading, 5 outta 5 on here.
But then if you go up the price range getting towards a grand, you'll get bikes which are obviously better specced but 'only' getting 4 outta 5 stars.
So I'm assuming the more expensive/higher specced bikes are the better choice and the scores are basically relative to other bikes/what's expected in the price range. Or is it the Rockhopper is a full 5 out of 5 bike no matter what budget you take into it?
Again, I know that's likely to be a question most of you roll your eyes at but it's my final check before I finally jump into this hobby.
Thanks

Yeah, the scores are realtive to value too - in the review of the Voodoo we sia dthat if it had been on sale at the original £600 it would be a 4.5 star bike.
If it was £1000 it wouldbe about a 3 star, as £1000 are lighter and have better forks.0 -
Ok, thanks for answering that. Very helpful. It makes the Hoodoo seem ridiculously good at £4000
