Which saddle?

Morning,

Picked up a new bike last week, a Boardman, and the saddle is playing havoc with my back. I've not been on a bike for a year or two but after each cycle, my coxic bone is killing me.

I need something a bit comfier, and without spending a fortune, what would you recommend?

Thanks,

Bill

If you're sure the problem is the saddle - ie not the fit/set-up of the bike fit, some underlying injury, or just easing back into riding a road bike, the saddle I found that had a really effective cut out which takes weight off the middle bits of that area and distinctly onto your sit bones was the selle italia slr max gel - it's a wider fitting by selle's standards and has a cut-out that is much wider than anything else. I had one of these for a short while but then switched to a spesh romin gel which I find more supportive across the whole width but with no pressure spots. shops that sell Specialized gear will be able to measure you for fit which is worth doing. Think with saddles be prepared to spend at least £40-80 to get something you like. Wonder if it's significant that you say you get the pain after your ride and not during it - when I have had uncomfy saddles I am grumpy when I'm on it but happy when I get off it !

If it's your back that is sore then it's not your saddle that's the problem it's your position.

Try playing with tilting the saddle slightly up or down or get someone to check your position to see if your bars are the right height and distance compared to your saddle. There will be an element of getting some conditioning back again if you've not been riding for a while too.

It could be lots of things as Blox said too but if the saddles comfy while you're riding I'd agree that's not your problem so you can put your wallet away (for now  )

    Good luck with it!

    Thanks for the replies.

The saddle is uncomfortable when in use and then the pain is worse when I come off the bike. It doesn't have any form of cut-out, weather by a dip in the material or a "hole". I think that might alleviate the pain as there wouldn't be any direct pressure on that part of the backside.

    Thanks again.

My 2p worth, sounds like a setup issue eg reach, saddle ht etc.... If ur after a different saddle ( think the boardman ones r rubbish) u could start cheap and try a charge spoon from wiggle at 14.95 atm, failing that try eBay and the classifieds for second hand ones as ur bum, is ur bum and what's right for one may not b for another.
Usual suspects though are spesh toupe, Romin, selle italia flite and ,max flite and the spoon as above.
    Good luck!

yeah if you're getting pain in your back, could just be angled incorrectly.
    Say... That's a nice bike..
