Hold it by the seat-post...
= all of them (except for bikes with integrated seat-posts, of course)"I had righteous got my wheel backmost from a fettlin' at the LBS and was hunt transport to equitation it. As it was Refrigerated in the AM......"0 -
Or one which uses the drop-outs and the bike rests on the BB cage, like this:

(Cheap and portable)

More robust, for the workshop...

FYI, you should always clamp to the seat post, NEVER the frame itself. If you over tighten the clamp on the top tube, you'll need a new frame. You're better off ruining a seat post than your frame.
Depends what you want out of a workstand and how much you're looking to spend. IMO, Kestrel make the best workstands bar none, but they're ludicrously expensive to buy new. I managed to pick one up on eBay for ~£100 that retails new for over £400.
Park make some very nice stands, and I often hear good things about one that Ribble sell for ~£60.0 -
Park Tools PCS 9 at £79.99 at CRC. Very, very good - bllet proof, good price and all parts are replaceable.
Re clamping: just don't do it up FT - use your brain.
Us the seat post to clap to - the Park Tools one does this fine.0
