Have some shims in the package.
Am I correct in assuming they go on the split ring, and only if the "ring cap" bears on the top cup before the bearings are properly pre-loaded?
That's all I can figure out from the pile of bits

Sussed, yup, correct presumption, well sort of, they go on top of the seal cover FWIW.

Further update, no shims were actually needed, it seems that these are used if the steerer is slightly undersize so the compression ring closes up more than it should.Giant Reign X10
