Thin-palmed mitts?

For some strange reason I suffer a kind of cramping at the base of my thumbs whenever I wear gloves. In the winter I've just got to live with it, but in the summer I'm perfectly comfortable without anything. The thing is, I'm well aware that I would make a horrible mess of my hands if I was to come off. With that in mind, would anyone have any recommendations for mitts that might offer protection, but only minimal cover of the palms? I guess I'm looking at something leather?

A lot of mtb mitts have very thin palms, I've got some fox full finger gloves that are completely unpadded. Might be worth looking at their range?
Edit: Old crochet back ones are pretty thin tooSaracen Tenet 3 - 2015 - Dead - Replaced with a Hack Frame

Thanks guys! I'll look into MTB gloves for next winter. Those Giros sound absolutely bang on. STock seems to be very low on them, though. I'll see what I can find.
Cheers!0 -
Have a look at Sombrio mtb gloves. I've got a few pairs and they're really nice. They fit well, have thin palms but are really comfortable. The Sombrio Jackal is an excellent glove, I've had a couple of pairs for a few years, and despite the thin palm, have lasted really well. I've got the old colour scheme, like below, but hte glove is essentially the same.

I use 661 MTB gloves which have a perforated, unpadded synthetic leather palm and yet a lightweight, open-mesh back. I was wearing a pair of 661 Raji gloves (£10 Chain Reaction) in an inline speed skate race where I crashed at about 40kph in a pace line and yet my hands and gloves were pretty unscathed - trashed my race-suit and ground some big chunks about my Bont skates though.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Petra Cycles seem to always have the Giro Zero in stock:

I have had several pairs of the Knog leather mitts (Ride Hard/F**k Off/8 ball).
Leather, soft, durable, no padding. They also have long finger versions for Spring/Autumn.0 -
I have some Giro Zeros and recommend them for what you say you want them for. They are nicely made and really have absolutely no padding at all - a big improvement from some Endura FS260 gel efforts I had previously.0

Thanks guys! I managed to find some new, white/black Zeros on eBay. They sound exactly what I'm after.0

I've been using the Zeros for a few days now and I am pleased to say they are exactly what I asked for, and I get none of the weird cramping when wearing them. They are good value and so I know I shouldn't really complain, but having worn them on a 45 mile ride this afternoon, I did become unpleasantly aware of the stitching on the inside of the palm after a while. It would also be nicer if the leather at the palm was a little tighter cut. Like I say, though, they're pretty cheap so I can't expect hand made perfection. They'll be absolutely perfect for the commute, but I might keep an eye out for something a little posher for longer rides.
Thanks again0 -
Ignore the above. They've worn in beautifully and are now stupidly comfortable (although they look like crap now, but that's cool). Only thing is I should have opted for a size smaller and let the leather stretch to me, but I now know that for next time.
Top tip guys! Thanks!0 -

Look out for Rapha's Pro Team Mitts coming back in stock or pick up an unused pair on eBay. I've tried many mitts but nothing compares to these. http://www.rapha.cc/pro-team-mitts/#tech-spec
The padding is just enough and I've done a couple of thousand miles wearing them without any trouble. As you've already realised, with leather get the size down to allow for stretching.
Don't fear the white (although I picked up a pair of each in the sale and wear the black pair 90% of the time) they clean up very well, but they look better a bit worn in.
Oh and if anything goes wrong send them back and they'll fix 'em free of charge.0 -

I always fancied a pair of the Rapha touring mitts, but the price is ridiculous. Those Pro team mitts are really good looking too, though, and now that you've told me the padding isn't too extreme... I just need them to come back in stock now.0

Just as long as you don't go for the Rapha winter gloves - absolute rubbish, way too expensive and very badly designed imo.0
