I aim to get back into MTB'ing but I also road cycle. I intend to use a back protector when doing trails at Glentress, so really im looking for a waterproof (it is scotland!) jacket that can fit over a slim back protector and max a short and long sleeve top at the same time. Also want to use if for road cycling, when I dont need hi viz!

Not sure if you can get best of both worlds, just dont want anything to flappy or with a hood.

Any advice would be great please, as to any jackets you have and fit/protect well!

Cheers

I have an Altura Nevis and love it. Not too fitted but not too baggy. Wore at Kielder for 6 hours couple of weeks ago when it rained non stop and there were flood alerts all over and I was bone dry. Don't seem to overheat in it either. Not sure what it would be like in the summer though.

I picked up a Gore phantom jacket and must say its one of the best jackets i have had for a long time.

It isnt listed as water proof but is VERY resistant to water, more importantly it keeps you very warm and regulates your body temp well, ie sweat a lot and you dont get wet inside the jacket.

Havnt washed it in nearly 3 months and still going very well(havnt washed it as i was worried i might damage it lol)
p.s anyone recommend how to wash a gore phantom?

So id recommend it without question, do you really need a 100% water proof jacket? end of the day you going to sweat a lot and most waterproof jackets dont allow sweat to escape so you get more wet from the inside than out.

i tried the endura jackets, both stealth and the PTFE flyte, the latter was VERY loud and would anoy me a lot, also the fitting was quite loose, the stealth was VERY snug fitting and the sizes are a bit wied, and didnt fit my bodyshape, but if it did i might of gone for it, though price is silly.

    thats just my view though.

Thanks for the input, I like the Endura gear but to be honest can see anything that would suit. I see the Gore on on sale at wiggle, but it may be a bit out my price range for now - appreciate it sound good though. As for washing Gore, use Nikwax Tech wash - cant go wrong!

Going to check the Altura though, looks a good bet. Ta

My Phantom gets washed after every ride. A brown splattered stripe from my arse upwards says it needs it (mud, before there are any comments on my resistance to fear!). Just stick it in the machine with everything else that I ride in. 40 degrees and no fabric softener. It's been washed around 30 times or so and no problems so far

I wash my Phantom (which is excellent btw) in Nikwax techwash. I used to wash it in with my normal stuff with no softener but the waterproofing/resistantness went to pot.

It's much better now I've reproofed it with Nikwax.

Have a look at the Endura Stealth - not cheap but very good and OK for on & off road. You may be able to get a thin back protector in there as well depending your size and shape.
