Usual story - which bikes should I look at

Looking for a new bike for my wife.
Will be used mainly for road with some forest trails, bumpy tracks, but no hardass single track.
Occasional tour (150 miles or so) as well so has to be able to take pannier rack on rear. Oh, and will quite possibly be pulling the wee one on a Burley trailer for the next couple of years!

Current mountain bike isn't really cutting the mustard as it's heavy and not really built for 40-50 mile rides.

Looking for something light and fairly speedy that will cope with the above.
Budget...around £500, but will be looking for good condition Ebay 2nd hander so expect a £800-900 RRP bike.

On first Google I've found Specialized Sirrus/Vita that may fit the bill, probably Comp spec (2nd hand). Am I on the right lines? I'm still in two minds about front suspension or fixed carbon fork.

Not sure I can offer any help as you are looking for a do all bike. The closest type to meet your needs sounds like a cyclocross bike which most allow fitting of guards and racks and will be a lighter option than a mtb. I am sure there will be woman specific cyclocross bikes but I don't know of particular models but an alternative would be a small frame size to fit your wife.

My partner has a Kona Lisa road bike which she loves but has road wheels on and wouldn't take it down any tow paths.

I have a Kinesis Crosslight cyclocross bike which is good and should be in budget secondhand.

I have a 2012 Sirrus with 700x35s Armadillos. I ride on a lot of dirt roads and grassy areas with no problems. I have fenders and rack on the bike too. Have done longish distances (>20 miles - very hilly terrain) with no problems. Bar ends may help also with hand positions. I paid around $500 USD for the base bike.
