Innertube Query

Hi, I've got a DMR moto digger tyre that is 24 x 2.35 and I got a puncture so I replaced the tyre with another 24 x 2.35, however the new tyre when fully inflated has huge bulges ether side of the valve and still has slack between the innertube and the tyre. Has the tyre stretched or am I doing something wrong here? I also bought a Schwalbe innertube that is 24 x 2.35-2.50 and even that fully inflated is a bit slack?

Thanks, Ollie

You do not need to replace the tyre if you get a puncture, just the tube.

Any pictures? I don't quite get what you are describing.
  • Well it was a blowout right next to the valve so it needed to be replaced. Basically I'm using all the correct size tubes to match the tyre but there's still room between the innertube and the tyre as it doesn't fit. I was wondering if my tyre had stretched?

I don't understand - if you pump up a tupe, any tube, it will fill the space.

  • I have pumped it up to over the maximum PSI recommended to the point where there are 2 large bulges on either side of the valve. This has never happened with any other tubes I have replaced.

    With the tyre around it?
  • No, out of the tyre but still it shouldn't bulge as much as it does.

    Why shouldn't it?
  • Because I'm sure all the air should be equally distributed around the tire or it will blow like it did when I only rode it about 5 mins last time as it seemed over inflated

Tube out of the wheel, when inflated has uneven shape. This is ok.

Tube in the tyre, tyre + tube on the wheel.

Then pump it up and see what it's like.
  • I have done and what I'm saying is the tube doesn't fill the tyre properly as it's fully pumped up but seems to small. Even thought the tube and tyre measurements match.

No, out of the tyre but still it shouldn't bulge as much as it does.

this is normal! its because the valve is stiffer than the surrounding tube and causes an anomoly in the inflation.

It will be fine if its not ill buy you a pint, im that confident! :D

Is the tyre seated correctly? You should first mount one bead of the tyre, lightly inflate the inner tube, then install the inner tube (without the valve lockring, important), seat both beads of the tyre, then inflate the tube and at the end - install the lockring.

I always blow up to about 20 psi and work the tyre round the rim to make sure its seated properly then fully deflate and work it again to make double and triple sure the tube isnt pinched. Its a kinda habit from work, but does its purpose and ive not pinched a tube in about 19 years (just watch me do one tomorrow!!)

your inner tube is too small, so you say

perhaps another inner tube, if you're 100% convinced it isn't working?

As a matter of interest how do you see inside the tyre?
Even pumping a very skinny road tube outside the tyre will blow it up like a balloon.
Once inside the tyre the pressure will be even as it has nowhere to go.
