On One 456 on a shoestring budget

I'm trying to put together an One One 456 for a mate who's on a budget of £500. It looks doable as the frame is only £139, so with some cunning shopping and secondhand bargains I reckon he could get a decent, capable bike together albeit not showy but that won't bother him as he hasn't ridden for years.

I'm a bit stuck on fork choice for him though, you can pick up RS Recons for less than £130 but I was looking at a longer (120-140mm) fork. I can't find anything of that travel within a sensible price bracket so it seems a S/H fork is the way to go. The Rock Shox range baffles me though (only used Fox forks for the last few years myself).

What would the collective wisdom recommend? QR will probably be absolutely fine as he hasn't ridden anything else and the wheelset will most likely be QR to fit in budget.

Any suggestions would be brilliant.

This is doable - one way is to buy a 'donor' bike (providing bits fit) and swap all the components. But that begs the question - why not keep the bike anyway lol.

If you could up the budget to £600 I reckon you could build a bike with full ten speed Deore groupo, recons and decent wheels.

I'll propose upping it. The beauty of building is you can spread the cost over a couple of paychecks! I've done it a few times myself. It satisfies that urge of upgradeitus as well!

What fork other than a Recon would you recommend of he wanted to go longer?

Budget long travel forks are few and far between - though the Suntour Raidon series are OK. Here is a build I put together using the 456 carbon frame:

    Frame: OnOne 456, £250 - http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FROOCAR456N ... aled_frame

    Fork: Reba 120mm, £270 - http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/f ... ckout.html

    Groupset (inc brakes!): Deore, £247 - http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/m ... upset.html

    Wheels: Sun/475, £57 - http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/w ... lizer.html

    Tyres: Fat Albert, £40 - http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/TYSCLALSSF/ ... lding_tyre

Bars, stem, seapost: Exotic (pick and mix them), £50 - http://www.carboncycles.cc/?s=0&t=2

    Saddle: your choice - £20

    Pedals: as above - £20

This is a grand, but you'd be saving on the frame and forks. The wheels and groupset are a steal!

Going back to the fork, look for a 2nd hand Tora 318 - cheap, reliable, and tough.

Thanks. Good heads up on the wheels, that's silly money!
    Happy with your build then?

Was for a friend lol - but I have those wheels, absolutely superb: handbuild, double butted spokes!

I can see myself building something similar for my "winter bike". Can't help but get involved with mates choices though! :D

It is very do-able, im in the process of stripping my frame and re painting it and replacing everything off it, so far i have spent around 340, that got me, Set of avid juicy 5's, rock shox recons 351 u turn, deore groupset, halo combat wheels on hope hubs and some other bits and bobs, obviously i already had the frame and bits like the seatpost, handlebars and stem, but if you spend a month just hunting on ebay and on here there are some cracking bargains to be had, all in great condition also

get on ebay, acera groupsets with mech disc brakes circa £150 and £170 with hydraulics

Ive bought some 2012 suntour xcr 100's with damping adjust and lo for £55

Still not decided on my wheels tho, but you can get adequate wheels for £50 a pair and £100 for a decent pair.

Thing ive found with my self build its not the big bits that cost, its all the bloody detail bits, they all bloody add up and sneak into your wallet and eat the budget
    Idiot ^^^^^^^^^

He's taken the first plunge! A frame has been bought! :D

Only thing is he went to the On One shop and came away with a Carbon 456  , it was cheap though. Frame with headset for £250.

Budget might have to increase accordingly now though. Next challenge is finding the right forks, did see some Epicons (he wants 140mm) go for £60 on fleabay though

That's really good! £300 is the usual discounted price for the carbon and that's without the headset.

Problem with 456 builds is inevitably the budget will be blown as you go for that item just a little bit better or the thing that's better but in the sale, yet still twice the price you were going to pay for the cheaper one. :D

My carbon 456 came in at £900. Should have been just frame cost and everything else off the old GT I was retiring, so in my case £400 as the frame wasn't under a good discount at the time. But then I saw X0 brakes going half price, that meant I went 10 speed so upgrades to various X9 bits, CRC doing 50% off next order so carbon bars too, etc.
