Hi all,
I can get a cheap pair of Shimano M123 mtb spd shoes, would these also be suitable for flat pedals?

I would not.

Can anyone explain why not? What about if took the studs out?
Any recommendations for some suitable shoes?
I really appreciate the help!Rockrider 8.1 (2011)0 -
the sole is far too rigid for flats, no matter how grippy the pedal is, you'll just slip off
try these out though, they can be used on both pedals

what morleyman said, not enough sole area to get a good grip, crap tread pattern on the sole, rubber will be far too tough.
Are you wanting a shoe you can use for both SPDs and flats, or just a shoe for flats? The shimano AM41 morleyman linked to is good, if ugly. The 661 filter is meant to be good for a similar price and they look like normal shoes, and five ten also offer some similar things for a bit more.
If you're just after a shoe for flat pedals, look no further than five ten. I have some five then freeriders, and they're excellent, well worth the money.0 -

Great sole, can be run with or without spd, I think.A much loved, Giant Trance X3 20100 -
Hi,
Im looking a shoe for flats, not bothered about SPDs at the moment.
The Five Ten freeriders look good, but shame they have laces instead of straps. Do the laces ever get in the way?
The Shimano strap pair, look what im lookimg for except for the SPD part which may take away some grip?Rockrider 8.1 (2011)0 -

I still don't think those shimano AM41s will rival five tens for grip, the stealth rubber sole on them is incredible.0 -
These are a major bargain at the moment: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=18195
Bought a pair two weeks ago and they are excellent and with this discount it would be rude not to.0 -
I think I will go with the Five Tens, the ones swelsbyuk linked to look the ones for me!
Thanks guys!Rockrider 8.1 (2011)0 -
A good choice - also, they come laced up with black laces with a spare white pair in the box.0

Lol, impacts are good shoes, they look terrible though, hence why I went with the freeriders. I guess if you don't mind the way they look then you should be chuffed with them, they are very good.0

Beauty is obviously in the eye of the beholder as I quite like how they look. That said, they will only be used for on the bike and not going to the pub in. I did the same with my last pair, which were made by Oakley, and they lasted 5 years.0

Fair play! I like my skater shoes, that's why I like the freeriders, they don't look out of place in the pub0
