Reducing the weight

This is a double header - as well as my reducing my own body weight! I want to reduce the weight of my Giant Terrago Trail 2007 as opposed to buying a new bike in my other thread.

Can a considerable reduction be made. The forks have already been replaced by Rockshox Recons, brakes my Formula, pedals by Supersonic flats, bar ends Supersonics.

Now the rest is original specification , how much can I reduce the bike by and what to do first and at what cost?

BOTTOM BRACKET TruVativ Power Spline
RIMS LM aluminium
HUBS Formula disc
SPOKES Black stainless steel
TYRES Kenda Blue Groove/Nevegal 26x2.1''
HANDLEBAR GIANT Comp aluminium
STEM GIANT Comp aluminium
SEAT POST GIANT Comp aluminium
SADDLE WTB Speed V

Dont bother, not worth the money. Buy a new bike instead. Or lose the belly if you have one to lose.

Theres not really any point in having a light bike if you're a fat knacker

realistically without spending a fortune your not really going to save much in weight on your bike.

Spending money on carbon seatpost/bars/cranks etc will be pointless with a lower end bike.

As some would say - have a big dump before you leave the house - that'll save you a 1kg or so!

Good frames on Giant so might be worth upgrading. It doesn`t need to be expensive.I have sold bits as I`ve upgraded then bought good secondhand bits off the classifieds or ebay.

Best place to save a load of weight for not much cash is with tyres.Schwable Nobby Nics saved about a pound compred to my OE wire beaded Nevegals.

Wheels are good if you can afford it and can always be swapped to the next bike.

I might have some lighter wheels, off my XTC which would be an upgrade on what you have...........

Agree with this - see above. Tyres first, then wheels & then 'maybe' forks - you could go rigid & save a lot of weight that way. Exotic carbon forks? But it may be cheaper to get a new bike...depends on your budget.

Wheels. Here is a nice set of wheels I was looking for - there should be a review on bikeradar someday soon... http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k735/a ... -bolt.html
for 10 more eur you would get front front QR/15mm adapter and rear 135/142-12 adapters which is good if you are planning on upgrading frame ect later on.

Dpends where your ride but Nobby Nics in Pacestar/evo compund if you want all rounders,@ 500g each in 2.1 or 540g each in 2.25.Also look at Rcaing Ralphs,Rocket Rons, which are lighter still if you can live with a faster rolling but lower treaded tyre.

Maxxis Aspens,Conti X king RS are also around 500g ish.

Exotic stem for £13.24 -167g and some Exotic carbon bars (e.g. 750s @ 157g for £60... but you may need to cut them down. I'll tell you if they are any good when I've trimmed mine down to 730mm and got used to them as they are too wide at the moment! I went for this to make my bars wider - but it'll save me some weight too.

    Try here:

    http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/misearch.html?serchform=directsend&query=NOBBY+NIC&x=14&y=11

ORC compund for 20 euros + 6 euros for delivery.

I`d go for the Pacestar version personally.

OK think I'm going for these

Big improvement over my original Kendas? Better the the bit of road I do before hitting the track?

Can they be had cheaper elsewhere?

You've swapped brakes & fork already, so I guess the next thing is tyres & wheels, as everyone else is saying. Plus a few small amounts to be saved with easy swaps to bar/stem/seatpost/saddle.

At that point its starting to get a bit expensive IMO.

Will the bobby nice make the road section quicker and smoother. Will it do the same for the track?

I went form Kenda Nevegal 2.1 wire beaded tyres to Nobby Nics.

Much lighter,a real transformation in how quick they spin up.Found them a lot less draggy on road sections, not as quick as Racing Ralphs but it`s a good all rounder which sounds like is what you are after.

For use on road, I find Nobby Nics really buzz, Panaracer Fire XC pro are much faster and less buzzy...
