I have been offered a set of mavic cosmic carbone ultimates for a really good deal but they are tubular. I won`t be racing on them and they will be used for good days up to about 40 miles. Is there anyone who uses tubulars for every day use or are they for racing only and would I then be better getting a set of cosmiv carbone slr or zipp 404. Are punctures a real problem on tubulars as I don`t want to be left stranded.

Yes you can use them everyday if you wish. It will work out more expensive if you flat.
Changing tubs isn't that difficult - check out YouTube - but you'll look a right nob if yu can't and get stranded !

I may well switch to tubs when I get some best wheels.

By my calculations based on past performance. I'd ride them about 12-20 times per year. So far I've ridden clinchers for 3 years (about 500ish rides) and had 3 flats. Extrapolating the data I reckon I'd be looking at 1 unscheduled deflation every 8 years*.

    Sounds ok to me 8)

*note - calculations may well be BS.

Changing a tub is actually easier than changing a tube in a clincher tyre... only difference is carrying tubs is a bit of a pain... you can carry one, two is a lot of room in your pockets/bag. That said, if your mates run tubulars, you can go with one only and rely on others in case that's not enough... all you have to do is convince your mates to shift to tubulars too...

Prawny, the beauty of handbuilts is that once you get bored of the clinchers, you can rebuild your wheels with tubs, as I did... 8)

I'd come to you first anyway Ugo!

It's only because my como's were scrap that I didn't consider tubs more this time. If I ever get some proper best wheels they'll be tubs, and I'll carry one spare and a can of pit stop.

I'd carry a can of lager instead... to alleviate the misery of a second puncture!
