with the wet weather should I avoid slicks, I've heard that they are just as good in the wet as treaded tyres

Funny isn't it how we tend to associate loads of tread with loads of grip. In fact, it's completely the opposite. Slicks put more rubber on the road (instead of the voids created by tread patterns) and consequently grip better in the dry.
Tread is there on car and motorcycle tyres to disperse water and prevent aqua-planing. However, the technical boffins at Continental reckon that, due to the narrow profile of cycle tyres, they don't start aqua-planing until around 130mph. They put treads on cycle tyres because they sell better, not because they work better. So ...
