Quick Release Help!!!

I know this subject has sort of been touched on before, but i still cant get a straight answer from reading through the posts, so....
Can a 9mm (standard) quick release fit into a fork that had been previously fitted with a 15mm Maxle?
Also vice versa??
the reason i am confused is that the axle that the 9mm quick release slides through in the wheel, seems the same size as a maxle! I may of course be wrong....but thats where i need some help please.

some yes some no.
it all depends on what you have."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I replaced the old Maxle wheel from some Manitou Black forks with standard 9mm Easton wheels and q/r and all seems fine but it concerned me that i keep reading that they dont fit!!
Also a mate wants to buy the old wheels but wants advice on forks which i dont want give without getting the right info.

what was the bike?
a Spesh? if yes that would have been their stout hub using a 9mm Qr axle not a 9mm axle with a Qr."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
