Hi, I'm looking to replace the Easton Vista SL's on my Cube and I've seen an Ultegra wheelset on planet x for £230. They seem an okay to me, but does anyone know of anything better for a similar price? Are RS80 C24 worth an extra £100 over the ultegra's? Guess I'm asking what you guys would recommend on a budget of £200 - £300

  • I have the Ultegras from Planet X. Great wheels. Love 'em. An ABSOLUTE pain to get clincher tyres on and off them though.

+ 1 - great wheels for the price although horific regards clinchers - I sold mine because of that issue.

I have RS80's, which I thought were essentially the same (apart from the laminate).

Never had an issue with either GP4000 or Ultremo.

A friend of mine just purcahsed some handbuilt wheels for £237. They are Miche Box hubs on Open Pro rims with (32 spokes) DT Swiss spokes. They run like a dream. Next time I want a set of wheels for a modest price I'm getting the same built.

I've got a pair of Eastons similar to yours and the handbuilts are definitely much better than those. They don't rub on the front brake blocks when going uphill for a start.

I've had cheap Schwalbe tyres and Ultremo R1's on them. Both really tough to get on and off. I can get tyres on and off without tools on other wheels. Just these that seem to be a real pain.

Ultegras may be a pain but the RS80s are really easy to get tyres on and off. Great wheelset and well worth the extra imho.

I think the Ultegra's are designed for tubeless tyres hence the tyres are difficult to get on/off whereas the RS80's aren't?

I have some Ultegra wheels and I'm a big fan. They have really well made hubs and a totally silent freewheel (which I didn't think was important until I had one!). Never had trouble fitting tyres to them. They spin up beautifully.

+1 would totally agree about silent freehub, excellent wheels no problems , been using for over a year right through the worst of the winter weather too. couple of tyre levers is most you will need.

I got some 28h open pro rims with novatec hubs for less than £200 weigh just over 1600g and look lovely. Ride really nice too and will be servicable for ages (cartridge bearings and easily available spokes & rims)

It might be worth looking into the handbuilts I was really suprised at how light and cheap they can be. I know a guy, pm me if you want his details.
