My bike has a cheap 9 speed - chain set and square BB and I want to upgrade to the Shimano SLX FCM660 Hollowtech II Triple Chainset. How will I know if the bb will fit in my frame ? Also will the upgrade work with my front derailleur - Shimano FD-M430? My original chain ring size is 42-32-24T the upgrade one would be 44/32/22 .

It will. But you will need to have the BB shell faced. See the topic in the FAQs.
Yes it will but will need to be re set."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

When changing from 42-32-24T to 44/32/22 rings do you think i will need a bigger chain or is it to much of a small change to make any difference? I guess i could just wait until i have done the upgrade to check but then it would mean waiting for a new chain if i need one.0

if the chain was the correct length before it will be too short.
you will need new gear inner as well for the front mech as it will need moving and adjusting."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I was thinking i know there are different ways to install a chain but i normally install it on the smallest sprocket and smallest chain ring , So i cant see how i will need a bigger chain if i install the chain like this - I was just wondering how you came to thinking i would need a bigger chain ? Unless im installing my chain wrong .0

Big sprocket and Big chain ring without going through the mech +2 links.0 -
the best way id to follow what the makers say and they say around the two big rings without the rear mech and add one full link (1"). 2 teeth is 1" so there is a posiblity you could lose the rear mech if the chain length is correct.
as you have used guesswork to size your chain you may be fine or you may not be as you are the only one who can know what the length of your chain is.
Ofcause if you never use any combo of big ring and big cogs you may be fine but i would checking it out.
also if a fully with a growing chain length there are other issues."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

If your bike is quite well used you will likely need to buy a new chainset + chain + cassette all at the same time.0

No because you have to take out either half or one and a half full links to fit a masterlink.I don't do smileys.
