Daughter's new Orbea Mountain Bike

Just bought my daughter a brand new Orbea MX 24 Team mountain bike. We considered getting her an Islabike, having owned one previously, but we have an Orbea dealer local to us so took a look at the company's website and she fell in love with this.

Having received it, the dealer was surprised and impressed to see that it uses the Shimano Dyna-Sys - and so was the shop's Shimano rep!

Only disappointment, as you might see from the pics, are the brakes which look like they come off a kids bike from 1986 - but not in a retro-cool way! That said, they work so why complain?

We've added the Bontrager bottle cage and changed the stock plastic pedals to SARS CNC platform pedals (thanks to Supersonic for the recommendation). Unfortunately, I made a bit of a mistake and should've ordered black pedals rather than the blue as they are much darker than the rest of the bike.

Took the bike around Wareham Forest yesterday and today and she loves it. It's a little big for her but nothing dangerous and she is much quicker now and can easily keep up with me (but that's not saying much!).

Anyway, please let us know what you think!

It looks a really good bike as it's got some really decent quality parts and the colour of the pedals looks ok so i wouldn't worry about that but the bike should of been a size smaller as a big bike is more awkward to handle and takes a lot more strength and skill to control which will put unwanted strain on your daughter and because of that can cause accidents .

That's a fair point, but she still has her 20" bike which she uses on the road and near our house. However, this was bought for use on cycle paths etc and she seems fine so far. Orbea recommend the bike for kids from 125cm - 150cm and she is 127cm so I'm confident we made the right choice.

I ordered one of these at the end of April for my sons birthday but the black and yellow version. It was shipped from Spain on Monday so should be here any day.

Having looked around at Isla Beinn 24, Scott Scale JR, etc I was swayed by the 10 speed Deore set up with 11-36 SLX cassette. It's got such a wide range it should work really well with the single front chain ring (I didn't want a triple front). I also hate gripshift from personal experience so the fact this has rapid fire shifters is another big plus.

Everything on the 24 Team seems to be well considered - quality drive chain, wide range gearing, light weight, decent fast rolling tyres.

The local dealer did a great deal so it wasn't much more expensive than the Beinn 24 and less than a Scale. I think I'm more excited waiting for it to arrive than my son.

I hope your son likes his bike as much as my daughter likes hers. The only thing that needs changing on receipt of the bike are the pedals. Can definitely recommend the SARS CNC from Triple Butted Cycles, they only weigh around 270 grammes and are much better than the plastic ones supplied. Bit expensive at £34 mind (but if you saved some cash thanks to a generous dealer, it's money well spent).

    Pics on arrival please :)

Picked it up today and I have to say I'm very impressed.

It was the first that the dealer had seen in the flesh and all the guys in the shop had been surprised at the quality of the components for a kids bike. The tyres alone retail for £30 each and they had been really surprised to see 10 speed Deore on it.

Orbea have even though of upgrade potential and have fitted the bike with a rear disc mount, cable stays to fit a front mech, the chain-rings are replaceable and the bash ring is removable to set the crankset up as a double if you wanted to.

Glad you like it. My dealer was also suitably impressed. He pointed out that he has the dyna-sys system on some of the adult Orbea bikes that retail at over £1300!

Hope your son likes it. Are you keeping the pedals?

I know very little about bikes if I'm honest but your comments about upgrade potential is good to know.
  • Hallo,
    someone already upgraded this bike?
